Project Description
The Geeks Rule Biology Club was developed in partnership with Teachers College, Columbia University by a team led by Dr. Felicia Mensah, Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology, and underwritten through a generous grant by athenahealth.
The Biology Club takes a unique approach, introducing biology topics through a lens of social justice. For example, the unit on cells is initiated by a discussion of the immortal cells of Henrietta Lacks, and the lesson on homeostasis and regulation is preceded by a lesson on urban heat islands.
Similarly to the Geeks Rule STEM Afterschool Program, our Biology Club provides enough content for two days of afterschool programming each week through the school year. The program features fun, hands-on activities, such as extracting DNA from strawberries and designing green spaces. And, like our STEM curriculum, the content is correlated to NGSS for grades 6-8 so our school partners can use our materials during the day to support in-class learning.
Interested in partnering with Geeks Rule to increase interest and proficiency in STEM among your students? And, thanks to our many sponsors, Geeks Rule provides its programming to schools at no charge. Contact us for more information.
